What this policy covers

This policy covers the promotional website in this folder and the Meme Machine browser game at memeachine.vercel.app. The promotional site and the multiplayer game use different storage and information flows, described separately below.

Information handled by the promotional website

The promotional site does not currently use an analytics service, advertising tags, account registration, or first-party tracking cookies. It stores your selected light/dark theme in local browser storage if you change the theme. Its share button uses your browser’s native sharing feature when available; otherwise it may copy the current page address to your clipboard only after you activate the button.

The optional feedback form opens a prefilled public GitHub issue draft containing the rating or message you entered. Nothing is sent to GitHub until you review and submit that draft. If you submit it, GitHub processes the information and displays the issue publicly under its own terms and privacy policy. Do not include private or sensitive information.

The site currently loads font files from Google Fonts. When your browser requests these files, Google may receive ordinary connection information such as your IP address, browser and device details, and the page that referred the request. You can block external font requests in your browser; system fonts will be used as a fallback.

Information handled by the game

  • Browser storage: The game saves a random player identifier, your chosen display name, avatar, and sound preference in your browser’s local storage. It uses session storage for the current room code. You can clear these values in your browser settings; doing so may prevent reconnecting to a room.
  • Live match information: When you play, the game processes your display name, avatar, room code, choices, votes, score, and connection state so it can run the shared match. Room state is set to expire after 24 hours.
  • Basic usage counts: While the game is open, it sends a pseudonymous browser identifier to count active visitors and unique visitors. The unique-visitor marker expires after 30 days. Match activity is kept as aggregate counts and recent event records.
  • Optional match feedback: If you submit it, the game stores your rating, comment, and submission time. It does not ask for your name or email. The system keeps up to the latest 500 feedback entries; older entries are displaced as new feedback is added, and the operator may remove entries.
  • Service logs: The hosting and database providers may process connection and diagnostic information, such as IP addresses, timestamps, browser details, and error logs, to deliver and secure the service.

Why information is used

We use the information above to operate rooms, reconnect players, calculate scores, maintain game reliability, understand aggregate usage, review voluntary feedback, and protect the service from misuse. We do not require an account and do not sell player names or match feedback.

Service providers

The game is hosted using Vercel and stores shared game state and operational data using Upstash Redis. Google Fonts serves the font files used by the promotional page. These providers process information needed to provide their services, subject to their own terms and privacy notices. If the service adds another provider that receives personal information, this policy will be updated.

Advertising and Google AdSense

At the effective date above, this promotional site does not load Google AdSense code and does not display ads. If advertising is enabled later, Google and other authorized advertising vendors may use cookies, web beacons, IP addresses, browser or device identifiers, and similar technologies to serve, measure, and personalize ads, including based on prior visits to this or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables Google and its partners to serve ads based on visits to this site and/or other sites.

When ads are enabled, we will publish the actual ad technology vendors and their privacy/opt-out links here. You can manage Google personalized advertising in Google Ads Settings. You may also use the industry opt-out page at aboutads.info for participating third-party vendors. Opt-outs are browser- and device-specific and may not stop contextual or non-personalized ads.

Before serving personalized Google ads to visitors in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or Switzerland, the publisher must use a Google-certified consent management platform integrated with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework. We will configure an applicable certified CMP and consent controls before enabling those ads in the affected regions. See Google’s publisher consent management requirements.

For more information about Google’s data use on partner sites, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.

Retention and deletion

Browser-stored settings remain until you clear them. Room data is configured to expire after 24 hours. Unique-visitor markers expire after 30 days. The application retains only the latest 500 feedback records, but does not currently have an automatic age-based deletion period for feedback; entries may remain until they are displaced or deleted by the operator. Hosting and database logs follow the providers’ retention settings.

To request access to or deletion of information associated with you, contact the operator using the privacy email above. Please do not put private or sensitive information in a public GitHub issue. We may need enough information to find the relevant record, but will ask only for what is reasonably necessary.

Your choices and rights

You can choose not to submit feedback, clear local/session storage, or stop playing. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, or a copy of personal information, and to complain to a regulator. Use the privacy contact above to make a request. We will handle requests as required by applicable law.

Children’s privacy

Meme Machine is a general-audience party game and is not designed for children under 13. Do not submit a child’s personal information in a display name or feedback. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact the operator using the privacy email above so it can be reviewed and removed where appropriate. If the service is directed to children or knowingly serves child-directed content, the operator must apply the required child-directed treatment and advertising restrictions before serving ads.

Security and policy changes

We use access controls and service-provider security features intended to protect stored information, but no internet service can promise absolute security. We may update this policy when the product, providers, or legal requirements change. The effective date at the top will show when it was last revised.
